Current Australian exotic pest incursions Biosecurity – everyone’s businessDr Mardi Longbottom, The Australian Wine Research Institute (AWRI)
Exotic pests are a major threat to the health and longevity of the wine industry’s greatest assets – vineyards. The past decade has been challenging for Australia’s grapegrowers, leaving many vineyard businesses with limited capacity to manage biosecurity risks. Furthermore, increased interregional transport of grapes has increased the risk of pest spread and increasing restrictions on agrochemicals could limit control options in the event of an incursion. Recent experiences with Grapevine Pinot Gris Virus and Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs have brought renewed focus on the wine industry’s top 40 exotic plant pests and their potential impacts on production and trade. This presentation will provide an overview of the wine industry’s biosecurity systems and responsibilities and highlight opportunities to ensure Australia’s vineyards are kept free from exotic pests.
